Dental anxiety – small steps that can make your visit easier

2026-09-28

It is common to feel anxious about dental care. You do not need to wait for the anxiety to pass before making contact. Start by explaining what feels difficult and what has helped you before.

Tell the clinic when you book

Say that you are afraid and ask how the visit can be adapted. For example, you can ask for a first visit focused on talking and planning. Explain if it is sounds, injections, pain or the feeling of not being in control that worries you.

Agree on how to work together

Ask the clinician to explain each step before starting. Agree on a stop signal, such as raising your hand, so that you can ask for a break. Discuss anaesthesia and speak up if anything hurts. A numbing ointment can also be used before an injection.

Prepare in your own way

Choose a time of day that suits you. Ask whether you can bring a support person or listen to something during treatment.

Follow the clinic’s instructions about food and drink. If you are to receive sedative medication, nitrous oxide or a general anaesthetic, special fasting rules may apply.

More support is available

If you have severe dental anxiety, you may need specific help, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Ask your dentist what options are available and whether a referral may be appropriate.
