Dental care allowances and high-cost protection – how they work in 2026
You may receive state dental care support from the year you turn 20 if you are insured in Sweden. The clinic must be connected to the state dental care support scheme. Ask which forms of support apply to your treatment.
General dental care allowance, ATB
The allowance is allocated on 1 July each year. In 2026, the following amounts apply, based on the age you turn during the year:
- Ages 20–23: SEK 600.
- Ages 24–65: SEK 300.
- From age 67: SEK 600.
- If you turn 66 during 2026, you also receive SEK 600 under a temporary rule.
You can save one allowance until the following year and use two allowances together. Ask the clinic what you have left and when it needs to be used.
Special dental care allowance, STB
If you have certain illnesses or disabilities, you may be entitled to STB for preventive dental care. The allowance is SEK 1 000 per six-month period and cannot be saved for the next six-month period. A dental professional assesses whether you meet the conditions and what documentation is needed.
General high-cost protection
Reimbursement is calculated using the lower of the state reference price and the clinic’s price, over a twelve-month period. Any allowances used are deducted before the calculation. You pay the first SEK 3 000 yourself. The state reimburses 50 per cent of the eligible amount between SEK 3 000 and SEK 15 000, and 85 per cent of the part exceeding SEK 15 000.
If the clinic’s price is higher than the reference price, you pay the difference yourself.
Special protection from the year you turn 67
For treatments covered by special dental care reimbursement, you normally pay 10 per cent of the reference price, or of the clinic’s price if it is lower. This includes fillings and certain other treatments. New crowns, bridges and implants are covered for the front ten teeth in each jaw.
Examinations, X-rays and preventive care are not included in this special protection, but may be covered by general dental care support. Ask for a cost estimate showing what applies to you.
