Wisdom teeth – when might treatment be needed?

2026-09-28

Wisdom teeth are at the very back of the mouth and usually come through in the late teenage years or early adulthood. Some people are missing one or more wisdom teeth. Others have wisdom teeth that have not come through.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No. A healthy wisdom tooth that is not causing problems can usually be left in place and checked at regular dental visits. The dentist assesses the tooth’s position and condition and whether it needs treatment.

Assessment before treatment

The dentist examines the tooth and the area around it. X-rays may be needed to see the position of the tooth and its roots. Tell the dentist about your health, which medicines you take and whether you feel anxious about the treatment.

If the tooth needs to be removed

Treatment is usually carried out with a local anaesthetic. Sometimes the tooth can be removed with a straightforward extraction. In other cases, the dentist needs to open the gum and divide the tooth to gain access. You will be referred to a specialist if needed.

Advice after treatment

You will receive individual instructions on how to care for the area afterwards and whether a follow-up visit is needed. Follow your clinician’s instructions.

Contact your dental clinic if you have symptoms or questions about your wisdom teeth or treatment you have had.
