The 2026 dental care reform
A major dental care reform came into effect on 1 January 2026. Its purpose is to make dental care more affordable and secure for people aged 67 or over, so that finances do not stand in the way of good oral health. The enhanced support applies from the year you turn 67 if you are insured in Sweden. The provider must participate in the state dental care subsidy scheme.
The enhanced high-cost protection, called special dental care compensation, applies to certain treatments, such as filling cavities. Compensation is calculated for each procedure covered by the support.
Examinations, X-rays and preventive care such as polishing and fluoride varnish are not included in the enhanced protection. Ordinary high-cost protection and dental care allowances may still be used for this care under their usual conditions.
Exactly how much the state pays, which treatments are covered and what applies in your situation are determined by the rules of the state dental care subsidy. The levels are set by the state and can change, so we do not reproduce them here — the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) is the source for the full, current conditions. We explain what applies to you and what the treatment will cost before we begin.
