What does a dental hygienist do – and when do I need to see one?
A dental hygienist provides both preventive care and treatment. You can get help with cleaning, examination of your teeth and gums, and advice on daily oral care.
What can a visit include?
What happens depends on your oral health. A visit may include:
- An examination of your teeth and gums.
- Removal of tartar and bacterial plaque where needed.
- Advice on toothbrushing, fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth.
- Help choosing interdental brushes or other cleaning aids.
- Planning further treatment or follow-up.
Dentists and dental hygienists work together
Both professions carry out examinations, preventive care and treatment. The help you need determines whom you see. If anything needs to be assessed or treated by a dentist, this is planned according to your needs.
How often do I need to visit?
There is no interval that suits everyone. The need for examination and treatment is assessed individually. Your oral health, your own cleaning and previous treatments affect the planning.
Contact your dental clinic if you would like help with your cleaning routine or are unsure which type of appointment you need.
