Clear aligners – time, care and cost
Adults can have orthodontic treatment too. Clear, removable aligners are one of several options. An examination is needed to assess whether aligners suit your teeth and bite.
How treatment works
You receive a series of aligners that move your teeth gradually. Change aligners according to your clinician’s schedule. Treatment time varies depending on the movements needed and how treatment progresses. A digital simulation shows the planned result, but does not guarantee the final position of your teeth.
Wearing time and cleaning
Follow the instructions for your particular aligners. For Invisalign, the usual wearing time is 20–22 hours per day. Remove the aligners when eating, drinking anything other than water and cleaning your teeth.
Clean your teeth before putting the aligners back in, and make sure you also clean between your teeth. Keep the aligners clean according to the product instructions. Contact your clinician if an aligner does not fit or if you are unsure how to use it.
Continued support is needed afterwards
A removable retainer or a fixed wire helps your teeth keep their position after treatment. How it is used and for how long are decided individually; it may be needed for a long time.
Ask what is included
Ask for a written cost estimate. Ask whether check-ups, any extra aligners and retention are included, and how costs are handled if the plan changes.
